Metadata

  • Commit Message: fix(format): prevent server crash on malformed raw color tags in say command
  • Branch: bugfix/m2-raw-tag-crash

Background and Context

The server crashes when a player issues the command say hi <raw fg:white nobold>test</raw> foo. The color formatting parser in lib/aethyr/core/render/format.rb does not handle malformed or unexpected <raw> tag attributes gracefully, causing an unhandled exception that crashes the server process.

Current Behavior

Entering say hi <raw fg:white nobold>test</raw> foo crashes the entire server with an unhandled exception in the format parser.

Expected Behavior

Malformed or unsupported attributes in <raw> tags are handled gracefully. The parser either strips the invalid tag, renders it as literal text, or applies only the valid attributes. The server never crashes due to player input.

Acceptance Criteria

  • say hi <raw fg:white nobold>test</raw> foo does not crash the server
  • Valid color attributes in raw tags still work correctly
  • Invalid/unknown attributes are ignored or stripped without error
  • All player input is sanitized before reaching the format parser

Subtasks

  • Code: Reproduce the crash by tracing the say command through HandleSayformat.rb parser
  • Code: Identify the specific parser failure — likely nobold is not a recognized attribute and causes an unhandled case
  • Code: Add input validation/sanitization in the format parser to handle unknown attributes gracefully (ignore or strip them)
  • Code: Add a rescue/catch around the format parser to prevent any parser error from crashing the server — log the error and return the raw text unformatted
  • Code: Consider adding nobold as a valid attribute if it's a reasonable formatting option
  • Docs: Update YARD comments on the format parser to document supported raw tag attributes
  • Tests (Cucumber): Add tests/unit/format_raw_tags.feature covering: valid raw tag parsing, unknown attribute handling, nested raw tags, malformed tags, the specific crash input
  • Tests (Cucumber Integration): Add integration feature verifying the server does not crash when players send malformed color tags.
  • Tests (Profiling): Run bundle exec rake unit_profile and verify no performance regressions.
  • Quality: Verify coverage >=97% via bundle exec rake unit. If coverage is <97% then review the current unit test coverage report at build/tests/unit/coverage/ and use it to write new Cucumber based unit tests to improve code coverage. Specifically, write Cucumber/Gherkin style unit tests that are descriptively named and specifically improve coverage on whichever file has the most uncovered lines by writing tests that will target the uncovered lines in the report. Once that is done rerun bundle exec rake unit to verify all tests pass and coverage is above >=97%. Only mark this as complete once coverage is >=97%, if not repeat this task as many times as is needed until coverage reaches >=97%.
  • Quality: Run bundle exec rake (default task: unit tests with coverage) and bundle exec rake integration, fix any errors if needed ensuring both pass across entire code base, do not ignore any failure even if it seems unrelated to this commit, fix it.
